The Size and Weight of Solar Energy Panels

Typical solar panels are approximately 5 feet by 3 feet, but for industrial buildings or larger-sized structures, they can be 6 feet by 4 feet. The weight of your solar panel of choice is also an important factor in installation parameters. They often weigh between 35-45 pounds. This weight comes into play concerning the distribution of weight per square foot, based on the type of roofing you have, the age of your home’s roof and structure, and how much mounting hardware is involved.

Newer construction can easily handle 3-4 lbs per square foot, which is the average weight for standard solar panel systems, but older homes may have a roof that cannot handle that amount of weight per square foot. You can contact your local roofing company for a simple roof inspection to determine the current state of your home’s roof and how much weight it can handle.

Determining How Many Solar Panels You Need

To calculate how many solar panels you need, there are three main questions:

  1. How many kilowatt-hours (kWh) does your home consume each year? You can figure this out by going online to your utility account, or a Renova representative can help you make a call to the utility to get this information.
  2. How much of your bill do you want to offset? A partial or total offset will determine how much energy you need your system to generate. The rate structure for solar will also play a role in deciding how much power you need or whether batteries are a good option for you.
  3. Where do you live, and how much sun exposure does your home receive? Site conditions play a role in determining how many panels you need.

The average American home uses 870-900 kWh of electricity per month, which calculates to 6-7kW solar energy power to offset this use by 100%. Depending on the size of the panels you choose for your system, you will need 18-23 panels. This size system will cover 370-435 sqft of your roof space. Homes in the Coachella Valley often use twice as much power which results in larger systems. By offering the most advanced and efficient panels from SunPower, Renova Energy can produce the power you need in the smallest area possible.
