Common Terms in Solar Installation and Home Energy Systems

  • Efficiency: This term describes how well the solar panels that are proposed will convert light from the sun into energy. This conversion percentage usually ranges from 21-24%, and this number will help you to compare different panel options.
  • Wattage: Wattage is the amount of power a single solar panel can make. This is important because the more electricity a single panel can make, the less you will need for your power system. The goal is to find a balance between affordability and wattage output so that your system is efficient in electricity and cost. This is key if your roof has limited space.
  • Offset: This is the amount of electricity that your solar system will cover, thus taking that amount off of your pull from the power company’s source. Systems may be designed for a certain percentage of offset, meaning if you have 100% offset, your solar power panels will cover all of your electric needs for a 12-month period, covering what you would have used from the electric company. Offset is typically based on the previous year’s usage. Choose your number of panels based on your expected use and any changes that you plan to make, such as purchasing an electric car or changing your HVAC system.
  • TOU: Time-Of-Use rates or TOU Rates describe the tier of rates used when you switch to solar energy and differ from regular electric use rates. This may vary depending on location and regulation.
  • Inverter: The energy created by solar panels is called DC current, but our homes use AC current. This makes it necessary to change the current from one to another using an inverter. There are two options for inverters: one large inverter can be used, or micro-inverters can be installed on the panels themselves.
